List building is one of the most important tasks for every online business owner. It doesn’t matter if you’re an affiliate marketer or you’re promoting your products and services. If you don’t have a list, you don’t have a sustainable business.
When you start your business, you start with zero subscribers. After a while, you see the growing number of people who signed up for your Newsletter. After the first subscriber buys something, you probably feel amazing.
Today, I’m going to talk about list cleaning. You won’t like it because nobody likes to remove his contacts (unsubscribe or delete them). List cleaning does precisely what you don’t want, but you should do it regularly if you're going to stay safe online.
List cleaning means removing your unresponsive subscribers from your lists. Believe me; you don’t want them there because they harm you and your business. When you have those contacts on your list, you get penalized for your marketing efforts.
If you don’t clean your list, it could happen that after a while your most loyal subscribers who want to get all your updates don’t receive your emails anymore.
So, when you remove the people who don’t open and read your emails, you are doing a favour to yourself and all those who can’t wait to get another email from you. I hope you understand how important list cleaning is for your business.
Some people opt-in to your list just to get that free thing you’re offering as a bribe in exchange for their email address. There is a simple solution to this problem, but many marketers don’t like it because it lowers sign-up rates. The solution is called a double opt-in form.
If you use a single opt-in process, you get lots of fake email addresses. They are not real, or they bounce. The solution is double opt-in where people need to confirm their email address before they can download your freebie.
Next bad thing is the email addresses from people who don’t open the emails. They bounce. If you’d use Outlook, you would get the notification that the system couldn’t deliver the email to that email address. If you have lots of bounced email addresses on your list, you will face deliverability problems.
You run even into a bigger problem if you’re sending emails to people who deleted their email address or didn’t login into their email account for years. If you email to such email addresses, you run into a so called “spam trap.” In this case, Google will blacklist your email address at once.
You can imagine what would happen when your email address is blacklisted. Your emails won’t be delivered to your subscribers, and your email provider will probably say: “Sorry, we can’t work with you anymore.”
I can’t tell you how often you should clean your list because I don’t know what you offer, the quality of your leads and how your funnel is structured. All I can do is to tell you what I do about cleaning my lists.
